Call for Artists: Canada 150 - Diverse Reflections of Canada

Prospect Human Services is a not-for-profit that helps people who face barriers to employment overcome those obstacles through individual skill development and creating workplace capacity. We work with a diverse population including recent immigrants, ill-and-injured veterans, youth, people with mental health issues, and adults with disabilities. To enhance our programming and generate community engagement, we seek collaborative opportunities to explore our creativity and build meaningful connections.

We are excited to announce that we have the opportunity to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday through a large-scale storytelling and art collaboration in partnership with Loft 112 and the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society. The Diverse Reflections of Canada project aims to collect and showcase quotes and stories from across Canada’s diverse population, ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard. These stories will then be interpreted by our team of visual artists to add to our final exhibition in December. The final compilation of these stories will be published as a legacy piece and reflection of Canadian identity to distribute to our partners, various immigrant and settlement organizations, as well as the Calgary Board of Education. These voices will give our youth a broader view of Canadian culture.

We are seeking five artists to each create three original artworks. Artists will be provided with the content from the writers, which they will use as inspiration for their works. Participating artists will be given their choice of medium for their total of three 2-dimensional artworks and will have the choice between canvas, hard-board or birch wood panels. The artworks will be showcased in the public gallery exhibition at Loft 112 and in the book.

To apply, please email a copy of your CV and sample of your works/portfolio to with the subject “Canada 150.”

Deadline for submissions is 12:00 PM, November 10, 2017.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance on or before November 20, 2017. All works need to be completed and submitted by December 5, 2017. If accepted, follow-up information and details will be provided to you. We appreciate your application and enthusiasm for celebrating diversity and Canada 150.
