Writing a Great Cover Letter

Cover letters are primarily a sales pitch, tailored to a specific job and employer.  It will help determine whether or not you’ll get the interview, so make sure it’s a strong and compelling presentation of your qualifications.

Although it may be tempting to write a lengthy cover letter, this can be overwhelming for an employer to read.  Keeping your cover letter short ensures that your qualifications and enthusiasm for the role are highlighted to the employer clearly and effectively.  By cutting out unnecessary details, you ensure that your main points stand out, making a stronger, more focused impression.

Here is a breakdown of what you should be including in your cover letter:

Paragraph 1: Introduction

  • Purpose : Clearly state the position you’re applying for and briefly introduce yourself.

  • What to Include : Mention how you found the job posting, why you’re excited about the opportunity, and a brief summary of why you’re a good fit for the role.

Example :

"I’m writing to express my interest in the Administrative Assistant position at XYZ Company. With three years of experience in office management and a strong commitment to organization and efficiency, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team."

Paragraph 2: Relevant Skills and Achievements

  • Purpose : Highlight your most relevant skills and accomplishments that directly relate to the job.

  • What to Include : Focus on 2-3 key qualifications or experiences that match the job description. Use brief examples to show how you’ve applied these skills in past roles.

Example :

"In my previous role as an office coordinator, I streamlined scheduling processes, reducing administrative delays by 20%. My proficiency in Microsoft Office, combined with my attention to detail, ensures tasks are completed efficiently and accurately."

Paragraph 3: Why You’re a Good Fit

  • Purpose : Explain why you’re a great fit for the company and the position.

  • What to Include : Connect your skills and experience to the company’s values or goals. Express enthusiasm for joining the team and contributing to the organization.

Example :

"I am particularly drawn to XYZ Company’s dedication to innovation and customer service. My passion for supporting teams aligns with your mission, and I’m eager to bring my skills to help achieve continued success."

Paragraph 4: Closing

  • Purpose : End with a call to action and express gratitude.

  • What to Include : Thank the employer for considering your application, express interest in an interview, and provide your contact information.

Example :

"Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my skills and experience can contribute to XYZ Company’s success. Please feel free to contact me at [phone number] or [email]."

Sincerely,
