Interview Preparation

Interviews can be nerve-wracking, but with the right preparation, you can turn them into opportunities to shine. Whether it’s your first interview or you’re brushing up on your skills, this page is your go-to guide for mastering the process. From answering tough questions to making a great first impression, we’ll help you walk into that room (or virtual meeting) with confidence. Let’s get you ready to land that job!

Interviewing 101

Congratulations!  You just scored an interview.  Now what?

First , make sure you know when and where the interview will be.  If it’s in-person, make a plan on how to get there on time – you don’t want to be late!

If the interview is remote, make sure you have a quiet place with a neutral background to take the interview.  An employer shouldn’t be able to see your unmade bed or dirty dishes in the background.

Research the Company and Job Role

  • Understand the company’s mission, values, products/services, and recent news.

  • Review the job description thoroughly and identify how your skills and experience align with the role.

  • Be ready to explain why you want to work for  this  company specifically.

Practice Common Interview Questions

  • Prepare answers for common questions like:

    • “Tell me about yourself.”

    • “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

    • “Why do you want this job?”

    • “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

  • Use the  STAR method  (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure answers for behavioral questions (e.g., “Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation.”).

Dress for Success

  • Choose professional attire that aligns with the company’s culture. When in doubt, err on the side of being slightly overdressed.

  • For virtual interviews, pay attention to your top half (e.g., a neat shirt or blouse) and ensure your background is clean and professional.

Prepare Your Own Questions

  • Asking thoughtful questions shows your interest in the role and company. Examples:

    • “What does success look like in this position?”

    • “Can you tell me about the team I’d be working with?”

    • “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”

Bring the Right Materials

  • Print copies of your resume, a list of references, and any work samples or portfolios (if applicable).

  • Bring a notebook and pen to jot down important points or questions.

Handle Tough Questions Gracefully

  • If asked about a weakness, frame it as an area for growth and explain how you’re working to improve.

  • If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest but confident. Example: “I don’t have experience with that specific tool, but I’m a quick learner and would be excited to get up to speed.”

Follow Up After the Interview

  • Send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Express gratitude for the opportunity, reiterate your interest, and briefly mention something specific from the interview. Example:
“Thank you for taking the time to discuss the [Job Title] role. I enjoyed learning more about [specific topic discussed] and am excited about the opportunity to contribute to [specific company goal or project].”

Stay Calm and Confident

  • Take deep breaths before the interview to calm your nerves.

  • Remember, the interviewer wants you to succeed — they’re rooting for you to be the right fit!

Learn from Every Experience

  • After each interview, reflect on what went well and what you can improve.

  • If you don’t get the job, ask for feedback to help you grow for future opportunities.
